Radio Caroline is a British radio station that began broadcasting in 1964 as an offshore pirate radio station, transmitting from ships anchored in international waters to circumvent UK broadcasting restrictions. It was founded by Ronan O'Rahilly and became famous for playing pop and rock music that was largely ignored by the BBC and commercial stations at the time. Despite government efforts to shut it down, it continued broadcasting intermittently from ships until 1990. Today, Radio Caroline operates legally as an online and digital radio station, still promoting its independent and free-spirited ethos. The station holds an iconic place in the history of UK radio and popular culture.
