Piraten Radio in the Netherlands refers to unlicensed, often illegal radio stations that broadcast primarily in rural areas, especially in the northern and eastern provinces such as Drenthe, Overijssel, and Friesland. These stations are known for playing Dutch folk music (Nederpop), schlager, and regional genres, catering to local audiences. Piraten Radio emerged in the mid-20th century and has remained a subculture despite crackdowns by authorities and stricter regulations. Modern pirate broadcasters often use advanced equipment and temporary antennas to evade detection by the Dutch telecommunications agency (Agentschap Telecom). Despite their illegal status, they maintain a dedicated following and are seen as a cultural phenomenon in parts of the Netherlands.
