Access Radio was a pilot initiative in the United Kingdom launched in the early 2000s to test the feasibility of community radio as a new tier of broadcasting. It allowed local communities to create and broadcast content tailored to their specific interests and needs. The project was overseen by the UK government and the Radio Authority, later Ofcom, and served as a precursor to the establishment of licensed community radio stations in the UK. The success of the pilot led to the formal introduction of community radio licensing in 2004. Access Radio stations were designed to be non-commercial and aimed to empower underserved communities.
